I love when things come together and work out.  Carrie, my neighbor, was looking for a photographer to take some senior photos of her oldest.  Her two younger kids can often be found in my home but Rachel is rarely seen since she is either studying or working.  Some great friends referred her to me and we talked.  She wanted to find a way to get photos of family who would be in town for the graduation as well as the individual images.  It took some maneuvering but we got it done and I am beyond thrilled with the results.  The only thing her mom told me as we were leaving was “I love black and white.”

One of the first things I was told was that Rachel is very photogenic (insert eye roll from Rachel) and that was definitely a true statement.  She was so easy to work with and up for anything I suggested.  I love when things come together.  I can only hope that she sees herself the way the rest of us do.

We started out at the Fort Bliss Replica and were greeted by bunnies.  They were everywhere and we never knew when one would pop out from a bush or just come passing by.

CP4A9690

Back to Rachel.  There are so many possibilities at the Replica and I had her moving constantly.  She was amazing!

I absolutely love her smile.

I have wanted to get a shot of Fort Bliss from outside one of the gates.  Well, from the car it looks like an easy shot but once we parked and got out I realized that the stone wall it much higher than anticipated and I had to figure something out.

CP4A9739

I asked Rachel if there was anywhere specific that she wanted to go for her session and she mentioned that she loves the benches next to one of the gates within Fort Bliss.  Can do!  We headed on over and I love what we were able to get.

You know this was coming but I told her we were done and as we walked back to my car I had one of my “this looks pretty cool” moments and we got a few more shots.

The shoes.  The legs.  The dress.

CP4A9789

I turned around and found yet another great little corner that seemed perfect.  Who knew that Rachel would knock it out of the park with this next location?  I knew.

CP4A9770

CP4A9779

I couldn’t decide between color or black and white.

CP4A9779-2

One of the things her mom and I discussed was graduation day and family.  We got together in their back yard for some shots of Rachel with everyone who came to celebrate the day with her.  She is loved.

Every now and again the stars line up and wonderful people come into your life.  Well, that has happened once again.  Thanks to the wonderful Army sisterhood I met Amy through mutual friends before arriving at our new “home”.  She also happens to be one of my neighbors.

At lunch one day Amy mentioned that her dad would be in town for Thanksgiving and she would love to get some family photos done with him included.  I was definitely up for the session and couldn’t wait to photograph her gorgeous family.

I am always nervous before a shoot and this one had an extra element to it…I know the photographer who shot her last family session at West Point.  Huge shoes to fill on my part.  I only hope I succeeded.

We arrived at a park that has some wonderful views of the mountains.  It requires a very small hike up a hill but I know the smaller trail to take.  The kids, however, took off on the steepest part.

While the kids were with their daddy I figured I could get a couple of shots of Amy with her dad.

CP4A7285

CP4A7286

I love this one with kids and their daddy in the background.

CP4A7275

We managed to get everyone together.

CP4A7281

It was time to climb up to the top and the kids decided they wanted to go the fun way.  We took the easier route but on the way I had to get a shot of their trek up the hill which made everyone on our level pretty nervous.

CP4A7289

Seeing Lucas on his daddy’s shoulders made mom a bit nervous.

CP4A7291

Everyone was safe and sound at the top.

We finally made it to the top and I dropped my gear so I could get the kids walking our way with their grampy.

CP4A7294

There were so many options at our new spot that we had to work fast in order to keep the kids focused.  Amelia just wanted to find snakes and Lucas wanted his plane back.

CP4A7296

Lucas has a million faces.  He is quite the character.

CP4A7297

CP4A7300

Never a dull moment.

CP4A7308

He temporarily got his plane back.

I had my great assistant, Dee, take the kids to get a surprise for their parents while I got a few of just the two of them.

We cleaned off the confetti as best we could then it was grampy’s turn in front of the camera with the kids.

I let the kids pick our next location in order to keep them wanting to stop for pictures.

CP4A7337

CP4A7352

It was time to just let the kids play, well, look for snakes.  I’m not sure about the fascination but I figured it was all good since mom and dad were there supervising.  I was able to get some great candids.

CP4A7354

It’s all about the boots.

CP4A7378

All is better now.

It was time to head back down so once again we went our separate ways.  This time only the boys went down what originally looked like the fun way.

CP4A7385

What turnstile?

CP4A7387

Oops.  He slipped

Thank you so much for trusting me with your family images.  I had a blast with all of you and the kids were great.  You all made my job easy.  Thanks to Dee and her mom, Martha, who helped me with my gear and lighting.  You two were awesome!

I absolutely love the Army life.   There are so many great things about it and, like everything in life, there are a few negatives.  One of the biggest that is a bit of both is the moving.  We have just moved for the 3rd time in 3 years.  That means having new neighbors and friends in the same amount of time.  I am always afraid of where we will live and what our new neighborhood will be like.  Will there be a nut case next door?  Will I be considered the nut case next door?  Will there be kids close in age to mine?  You get the idea.

Our most recent move was a bit easier since I had friends moving to the same location at the same time and we knew where we were going to live.  That in itself is a huge plus.  One of my good friends, Alice, had also told me about my future neighbor since they were friends and it was all good.  Whew!

I really had no idea  just how lucky we were with our new neighbors.  Meredith was so welcoming and had a daughter just one year older than mine.  Score!!  I slowly got to know her since we were still moving in and she has been here long enough to already have an established group of friends.   She was quick to introduce us to as many folks as possible.

3 months after meeting her I noticed that she was rocking some very cool pink hombre style hair.  I thought nothing of it since she has that kind of go where the wind blows personality.  Shortly after I found out just why.  She had been diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer.  The amazing thing about Meredith is that it never showed.  She was always smiling and never stopped her regular activities.

I mentioned to Alice that Meredith needed a photo session.  I just love the light that shines through her and wanted to capture her true essence.  I was up for doing the session or assisting Alice if that was more comfortable.  Meredith was all for it and I just waited for the word.

You know just what a great person she is when you see how she is surrounded by so much love and support from friends and family.  She has such a caring heart and selflessly gives of herself.  I am sure that you too will see the beauty that is within come out in the photos.

We started her session at the Old Fort Bliss Replica.

We finished up and headed out to our next location that I found when out and about with my friend and assistant, for this session, Dee.  Meredith did a quick change in my car so we could do the next part of the session.  It required a bit of a walk, uphill.  It was the perfect spot.  As we were walking I noticed a different spot that was calling her name.  She just didn’t know it.

CP4A6634Gorgeous!!

CP4A6630

She nailed the “whip it” technique.

CP4A6627

Straight on, left side, right side…they all look good.

We finished up and started our uphill trek.  There is an old turnstile at the top so we took advantage and then just had fun with the scenery.  I’m pretty sure this is some sort of flood plain thing but it’s beautiful and no rain in sight so why not.  Plus there are cyclists riding all around us so it must be okay.

I love the fun that she has with everything she does.

CP4A6673

I have a rolling tote of stuff that I bring to sessions and I had forgotten about this long piece of pink satin.  I pulled it out and she was up for my idea and she looked amazing.

True to form I packed up and we headed back to my car but as we passed the tree from earlier I noticed that the sun was in a perfect spot and I had  to get just one more.

CP4A6715A huge thanks to Dee for assisting me with this very special session.  Thank you, Meredith, for allowing me to capture your beautiful soul and freeze it in time with these images.  You are stronger than you know and the love of family and friends will see you through.  Your friends said it best, “Cancer picked the wrong girl to mess with!”. We love you!  Now go and…

If this beautiful young lady looks familiar, she should.  I photographed her with her family (french family) and that led to this senior session.  I am honored that she wanted me to do this for her.  We had a wonderful time with Sarah and her parents.  I truly hope that she loves her photos as much as I loved taking them.

I feel like I should start with the last image I had of Sarah before seeing her and her family again this past year.  This was included in their Christmas card when Sarah was a teeny little cutie.

Time sure flies and this adorable little girl is now a beautiful and talented young lady.

CP4A4997CP4A5004Yes, I had her get in the water.

True to form, as we were headed back to her house I found another spot that seemed perfect for some images.  I had her leave her swim team jacket on for just a couple more.

I can not thank ya’ll enough for asking me to document this special time.  I can’t wait to see all that she accomplished in life.  She has wonderful role models so there is nothing she can’t do.
