I love when I am contacted about family photos because something they have seen caught their eye. This is what happened to Danielle when she saw one of her friends on my site after their family session. The only obstacle we had was that they are a dual military family so scheduling can be tricky. Luckily, we only had to reschedule once and the crazy November weather held out for their session time. It was a bit cooler than expected but we worked with Mother Nature to get some great shots.

I always ask what location they would like and Danielle was interested in Old Fort Bliss Replica so we met up there on session day. It as cooler than we expected but not as windy as it could have been. Poor Lily was not too happy with the thought of being outside, cold, and having to listen to the crazy camera lady. Luke only wanted to run free and play. Typical family session that makes for quite a bit of fun and lots of opportunities.

CP4A3036

She did not like the cooler temps.

CP4A3042Bundled up.

We decided to move on to another spot while Lily warmed up with a blanket.  We were hoping for a couple of shots of just the kids but Luke had other ideas.  My favorite image of Luke can be seen here.

CP4A3060CP4A3066

I quickly realized that this was not going to happen so I gave Lily a chance to pick her spot for some individual shots.  Danielle was on Luke duty since Heath had gone home to get jackets.  One of my favorite images of Lily can be found here.

Once Heath returned it was time to get some shots of him with the kids.  We started with Luke so Lily could get her jacket on and warm up.  Then we moved on to Danielle with her babies.

It was time to move on to another area and give the kids some time to play.  As we loaded up I looked over and noticed that they went to their daddy’s resting spot.  Why not?

CP4A3148CP4A3157

Luckily, I had my amazing friend, Ronya, assisting me and she took charge of the kids (lots of running involved) while I got some shots of Danielle and Heath together.  They mentioned that they aren’t the lovey dovey picture type but boy did it make for some fun moments.

On the move again, I wanted to try for some more family shots.  We hit a few different spots for these images.

Now it’s time for some great images of just the kids.  They are so cute and Lily is such a good big sister.

Danielle and Heath, you have two amazing little ones and I am thrilled that I had the opportunity to spend an afternoon with you all.  We had so much fun and I hope that you did as well.

*Thank you, Ronya, for all of your help.

I met Toni 3 years ago when our husband’s were both Tarantulas at Fort Irwin, CA. Believe it or not, I never did get to photograph her family, however, she assisted me a few times on photo shoots and I do have shots of her working. She can hold an off camera flash and umbrella like a boss!  She got into a disagreement with a Joshua tree and lost. She had to fling some flowy fabric and then jump out of the way while on a steep incline (it didn’t look that steep from where I was standing). There were many more but some things are not meant to be shared.

She is full of life and a blast to be around so I was pretty happy to find out they were moving to Fort Bliss. Her husband and son know that once a year there will be photos taken so they were ready.  I asked her if they had an idea of any locations and they only had one request, Old Fort Bliss Replica, and then the rest was up to me. I did a bit of scouting to make sure the area I love (Heinrich Park / Hitt Canyon Trail) was good to go and it was perfect.

We met up at the Replica to start and I forgot to mention that there are a lot of goat’s heads at this location which could be problematic with the beagles, Bradley and Beau.

CP4A2774Bradley kept resting his head on his daddy’s leg.

CP4A2779

A bunny kept distracting us so we let Tristan (T) go after it.  He started off at a slow and sneaky pace.

CP4A2784The image of him running back to us can be see here.

T was ready for a change so we headed to the other side of the Replica for some individual shots.

CP4A2791Toni ~ T, don’t pull things off of the tree.

CP4A2792Huh?

CP4A2796Just one more.

I promised T that he could climb a hill so we took a break to let him do his thing.

CP4A2804I’m this big!

CP4A2801CP4A2810“It’s not what we have in life, but who we have in our life that matters.”

Time for T to play so I can get some shots of Toni and Brent.  Luckily, the area we were in was sort of fenced so we could keep an eye on the boys.

CP4A2827

It was time to gather the dogs and head to the cars to go to Heinrich Park for our next round of images.

CP4A2832

This park and trail has become one of my favorite locations in El Paso.  There is an unobstructed view of the mountains and there are so many possibilities for some amazing photos.  Luckily, or hopefully, the snakes have already gone in to hibernate for the winter.  Our biggest issue at the park was the playground and T but he was quickly distracted with some puff balls and the knowledge that he was going to climb a hill.

CP4A2837_BWCP4A2839_BW

We climbed up a hill then went down the hill and had a discussion about hills with T.  It was all very entertaining.  The first shot after going up the hill but before going down the hill on the other side can be seen here.  We started with some mother and son time.

CP4A2854_BWCP4A2857

Now for some T time.  I figured while he was interested in what I was doing I would get some individual shots.  Well, he was more than ready and appeared under my lens as I was changing the camera settings.  I’ll take it!

CP4A2858I had him squat down so I could get the shot I was originally planning.

CP4A2862Stinker.

That didn’t last long so we moved on to some father and son shots.  The progression of these is priceless and perfect.  He started off so sweet and innocent then…BAM!

CP4A2869CP4A2873CP4A2875CP4A2876“A child’s laugh could simply be one of the most beautiful sounds in the world.”

T decided he wanted to go find some “snackoles” (snake holes) so Brent went with him to see what they could find.  Toni and I stayed behind where there were no visible “snackoles”.

CP4A2878Nope, nothing there.

CP4A2881“Come on!”

I figured it was a good time to get a shot of Toni with her 4 legged boys.  I couldn’t have gotten this shot if I had planned it.  Brent and T were trying to stay out of the way but were in the perfect spot.

CP4A2886She loves her boys, Bradley and Beau.

After the shot the big boys kept on looking.

CP4A2888“We found a snackole!”

CP4A2890

It was time to make our way back up the hill to go down the hill.  Yes, we had this conversation again.Once we got to the top we stopped for a few more photos with Northeast El Paso in the background.

CP4A2896

Brent wanted some photos with El Paso in the background but it was decided that going to the scenic overlook was not a good idea with T, Bradley, and Beau in tow.

CP4A2900CP4A2902T ~ “Aye yai yai!”

CP4A2911CP4A2914CP4A2921“Move out!”

In true form we were going down the hill since we were done but I remembered the red bench that I absolutely love and had yet to use.  Just a few more.  T just wanted to go to the playground.

CP4A2931Golden hour is awesome!

CP4A2937It’s easy to see where T gets his mischievousness.CP4A2939

They quickly came back to me and I was able to get some great shots of them watching T play.  He decided to join us so I went with it.

Whew, what a journey!  Thank you Toni, Brent, Tristan, and pups for your patience and cooperation during our session.  I’m so glad I finally had the opportunity to photograph your family and am so very happy that have you trusted me with your memories.  I truly hope you love your images as much I did taking them for you.

If you follow my blogalicious you may remember this gorgeous family. About 2 1/2 months ago I was there for their reunion with Lance as he returned from a deployment to the Persian Gulf. If you didn’t see the images you are in luck and just need to click here to catch up. I adore the girls and Mom and Dad are pretty awesome, as well. Needless to say, I was thrilled when Lydia asked me If I would be willing to do a family session.

We set a date and only had to change it once. I couldn’t say no when she had a choice between a family session or taking the girls to see Frozen on Ice. That’s a no brainer and I didn’t want to be the bad photographer who kept them from Elsa, Anna, and Olaf (he’s my favorite). We ended up with a perfect desert day.

All I knew was that they like rustic and wanted memories of Fort Bliss. We decided to start at Old Fort Bliss Replica. So many different photo ops at this location. I love finding new areas there and trying new things.  Plus, the only thing that I was told by Lance and Lydia is that they like rustic.  We are in the perfect location for this style.

This first few shots are my way of getting the family comfortable with me and the camera.  It also gives me an idea of what I can and can’t do.  I remember how serious little Victoria was at the welcome home ceremony so I had my amazing assistant, Ronya, ready to act like a fool to get her to laugh.  It turns out that little miss was ready for the camera and full of personality.  Abigail and Shelby are models in the making.

CP4A2157CP4A2163Time to jump to the next spot.

CP4A2164The girls loved the steps.

I wanted to get some group shots with just the girls and then break them up with just Lance and Lydia.  They were so cooperative and willing to do just about anything.

CP4A2171Me – “Pretend it’s cold.”

CP4A2173Victoria – “But I’m not cold.”

CP4A2185“How is it possible that out of all the little girls in the whole world…we got the best ones?”

CP4A2193CP4A2184

I put Ronya to work to keep the girls entertained while I got some shots with just Lydia and Lance.  Not an easy task because this is one tight knit family.  I love that they always wanted to be in the photos.

CP4A2199-2Does anyone else see a resemblance to Ken and Barbie?

CP4A2208CP4A2210They wanted to climb on the logs, too.

It was time to get a each girl individually.  I told them to look around and find where they wanted to go for their alone time in front of the camera.  We almost had an issue when they all wanted to same spot but we made it work.

As we were heading out to a new location I was able to sneak some more of just Lydia and Lance.

CP4A2275CP4A2280I have no words.

The Franklin Mountains make for a gorgeous backdrop if you get there at the perfect time around sunset.  We headed over the Lt. Noel Field to get a few more shots of the family before losing the light.  It was back and forth since the sun kept playing peek-a-boo behind the clouds.  This is when it became very difficult to choose favorites to share.  Love them ALL!

CP4A2292Well, we can see how Victoria feels about this one.

CP4A2295Walk away from me and then act naturally on your way back.  Trust me.

CP4A2293CP4A2301CP4A2296

This is when we lost the girls.  We were done and just let them play and run.  I love it!

CP4A2313CP4A2315_BWPerfection.

CP4A2322It’s time to go home!!

This was such a fun session and I am so thankful that I was asked to take them on this journey.  The girls were amazing and so patient and cooperative considering how long we were out.  You are an amazing family and I know you will be missed here at Bliss.  Best of luck to you on your next adventure.

*Thank you, Ronya, for your assistance and humor.

When Rhonda asked me to shoot Dan’s change of command ceremony she mentioned that they had not had family photos done in quite some time and was thinking about having it done. She also knew that it would be tricky planning it all since she had already moved to the DC area and would only be here for a couple of days.
She got in touch with me once the change of command date was finalized and we set the family session for the same day as the ceremony (you can see the ceremony here) but later in the day. I knew they had plans that evening so we were in a time crunch. They were patient and didn’t seem rushed at all which made the session that much smoother.
They wanted to have memories of their time at Fort Bliss so we shot at the Old Fort Bliss Replica (recreated to look like it did in 1857) and on LT. Noel Field with the Franklin Mountains in the background.  Dan’s father was in town for the ceremony and we were able to get him in some of the photos.

It was time to head over to the Replica for some more individual and group shots.  I am always amazed at just how many different photo ops there are at that one location.

As we were walking around one of the guys mentioned the sunflowers that were still alive and how it was mostly green.  Well, that gave me an idea and once I get something stuck in my head… I took Dan and Rhonda over to them and then moved them a bit so that Rhonda could get in the middle of it all.  She looked at me like I was crazy and I moved them a bit more thinking that maybe that was the problem.  Nope, she looked at Dan and said, “She doesn’t know me does she?!”  The good thing is that she trusted me and they both went climbed into the box and the results were some of my favorites.

CP4A2084CP4A2088

I’m sure that Rhonda was more than ready to get out of the flowers and move on to something else.  I figured it was time for some mother and son time.

Photographing the ceremony in the morning and then following it with your family in the afternoon was amazing.  Thank you for trusting me with your memories.  I hope that you enjoy your new adventure and continue to make many more.
